What do you get when a Florida Naturalist/kayak guide and a renowned scientist sequencing the DNA of the bioluminescent dinoflagellate responsible for the glowing water in the Indian River Lagoon join forces? A fun kayak tour sure to quench your thirst for knowledge! Sunny, a tenured guide, was lucky enough to have the opportunity years ago to assist Dr Kathleen Cusick in water sampling on a private tour she booked— they hit it off! Dr Cusick quantifies the dinoflagellates in the water by filtering it, and she has been amassing cumulative data for many years to learn things like… why does the algal bloom have varying adaptations for survival around the lagoon as a single-celled organism? Sunny’s consistency in presence on the lagoon has been valuable to Dr Cusick‘s studies in being able to share her observations in fluctuations in the behavior of the dinoflagellate bloom and some of the effects it may have on the other organisms that call the Indian River Lagoon home. Their love for preserving the lagoon for generations to come lead Dr Cusick to long for a way to offer her knowledge to the community, and Sunny to want to start her own tour outfitter launching smaller tours where she could really connect with her patrons and interpret the ecosystem for them, and so came Sunny Nights.
